Avilla - Indiana State Police Master Trooper Steve Malone is investigating a two vehicle crash that happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. this morning, March 23, on State Road 8 west of CR 1100 east near Avilla. The crash sent two individuals to the hospital and has left one man in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Joe K. Combs, 34, of Garrett was driving a 1995 Lincoln west on SR 8 when he crossed over the center line and collided head on with an east bound 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck. The truck was being driven by Dan L. Brown, 54 of Auburn. At this time it is unknown why Combs crossed over the centerline.

The force of the collision sent the pickup truck off the road and into a fence and left remnants of the Lincoln scattered across the highway. Rescue crews worked for nearly one hour extricating Combs from his vehicle before he was taken to Parkview Regional Hospital in Ft. Wayne suffering from head and chest injuries. Combs has sustained life threatening injuries as a result of the crash but is currently listed in stable condition. Brown was also treated at Parkview Regional Hospital for neck and back injuries but has since been released.
During the investigation it was discovered that Combs was driving illegally. A records check through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles showed that Combs was listed as a habitual traffic violator and had a lifetime driving suspension. This felony charge will be forwarded to the Noble County Prosecutor's Office.
Agencies assisting at the scene were the Noble County Sheriff's Department, Avilla Police Department, Avilla Fire Department, Garrett Fire Department, and Noble County EMS.

As Governor Daniels stated, "Today is an important day to say: Indiana's outstanding law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect all Hoosiers. The right thing to do is cooperate with them in every way possible. This law is not an invitation to use violence or force against law enforcement officers. In fact, it restricts when an individual can use force, specifically deadly force, on an officer, so don't try anything. Chances are overwhelming you will be breaking the law and wind up in far worse trouble as a result."
