Thanks to telecommunications staff
Doug Harp, Noble County Sheriff, tells us that the week of April 12, 2011 has been declared National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to those men and women who have accepted the challenge to serve as dispatchers with our department as well as those who serve in agencies nationwide.
In 2010, the Noble County Dispatcher Center received more than 30,000 calls for general service, each requiring an appropriate response from a dispatcher. They also received over 18,000 emergency 911 calls.
Dispatchers typically are the first line of response to an emergency event. The Noble County Sheriffs Department has seven business phones lines and four 911 lines that ring into the dispatch center. During a crisis, these lines will ring non-stop. While simultaneously gathering critical information from callers, the dispatchers are on the radio directing police, fire, and EMS units. The rare abilities to remain calm, to multitask, and to make decisions based upon limited information while under stress are daily requirements of this stressful occupation.
We are extremely proud of our dedicated dispatchers. We would like to recognize their hard work and dedicated service to the department and to the citizens of Noble County.
Through the efforts of dispatchers, Noble County is a better and safer place to live.
Dear Editor,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your words of encouragement in seeking a possible seat on the Avilla Town Council. Unfortunately I did not submit my name for candidacy. The reason for this is a Federal Law called the “Hatch Act”. The Hatch Act is a Federal Law that prohibits individuals employed by companies or agencies that receive federal funds from seeking an elective office. The company I am employed with does receive federal monies through subcontracts which could have made me ineligible for candidacy.
I have submitted all requested documentation to the Hatch Act Unit seeking eligibility for candidacy, but received no response by the deadline for filing. If I am deemed eligible for candidacy at a later date I will then decide whether or not to seek election in the future.
I truly appreciate your words of support and hopefully in the future I will be able to serve you.
Sincerely,
Donald J. Papai, Avilla
Dear Editor,
Over just the last week I have had two different instances of kids being bullied at school come into my school. Fortunately, I am part of a forward thinking group of martial arts professionals who have realized that bully prevention IS self-defense. So over the last 10 months I have been researching and training in different bully prevention methods. I have gained knowledge from the Olweus Bully Prevention Program, PACER Center, and Verbal Judo and have begun teaching ways to deal verbally with bullies at my school.
We all know the world our children are growing up in is dramatically different from the one most of us adults grew up in. Because of this I’ve worked with to put together a community resource site to help parents and students understand how to deal with bullies. You can visit the site at www.noblebullyproject.com. I would love for you to contribute your bullying stories (no names please) as well as any resources or information you have that may help others.
Hayden’s ATA wants to be part of the village that helps to raise our future leaders. We have developed school talks as well as peer education presentations that discuss the bullying issue. If we can ever be of assistance to your family please don’t hesitate to call us. Though bullying will always exist there’s no reason children shouldn’t know how to deal with it properly. Please visit www.noblebullyproject.com!

Dear Editor,
The Golden Ticket
Take a moment to picture the beautiful “doormat” Kendallville Heritage Mural welcoming every passing car and person to our community and downtown Main Street. As our community, tourists and generations of years to come walk up to this mural and a possible sitting park in front of it someday, they will view the Golden Ticket placards with the names of donors who made it all possible.
This community project has been in the planning stages now for four years and this year we want to make it happen. This project will showcase the city’s railroad history and its influence on the heritage of the community. The project – known as the Kendallville Heritage Mural project was developed through a partnership between the Main Street Business Association, the Kendallville Heritage Association and the Kendallville Redevelopment Association.
The mural was appropriately named after the trains that first made Kendallville a regular stop on their route; securing it on the map as an important hub of activity, as well as a prosperous place for settlers to call home. The mural will include various historical reference and landmarks, including
Bixler Lake Park, the Mid-American Windmill Museum and McCray Refrigeration to name a few.
Please take a moment to consider having your family’s name, affiliated organization, group, family foundation or business being listed on a “Golden Ticket Placard” for lasting years of viewing, appreciation and recognition. Please consider a tax deductible contribution to this project and help us complete this historical project and mission. Please call me for an information and sponsorship form. With your help, we will continue to make Kendallville the “hidden diamond” for many more to discover.

To the NooZ,
Keep up the good work on the Avilla newspaper.
Of course I am partial, as Phil is my brother and he likes to write. Once in awhile he will ask,,,,do you remember such and such??? I always have liked writing and wish I had some of the stories we had to write in Miss Miller's English class.
My writing now mostly consists of my past years of where we lived and where I went to school. We moved around a lot during WWII and right after until the folks settled west of Avilla and Phil and I finished school there.
With the state of the Kendallville News newspaper, I hope you will keep up on the obits column. When one moves far away, as Phil and I have, it is interesting to be aware of the updates of those persons we knew and/or grew up with.
Email is great in keeping in touch with classmates and old friends but does not do it all. I believe in today's world, newspapers are still an important part of our world,,,,either on paper or on line, but online news must still have complete stories to hold the public's interest. One question, are you equipped to publish photos, like class reunions, etc.
Thank you and good luck with all you do.

(Editor's note: Thanks, and yes, we can print photos on our website. Photos may be submitted via email or snail mail. Please include a caption identifying all classmates pictured, and your name, address and phone.)
