Deputy works hard to keep drunks off roads

Drug Free Noble County and the Noble County Sheriff’s Department recently awarded Deputy Carey Coney with a special Certificate of Recognition for his efforts to keep drunk drivers off local county roads.

Noble County Sheriff's Deupty Carey Coney was recently recognized by his department and Drug Free Noble County for his work in keeping drunk drivers off local roads. Doug Harp (left) and Regan Ford, of Drug Free, presented the award recently.

Many of us have found ourselves following an impaired driver, driving erratically swerving on and off the roadway, often narrowly escaping an accident. It’s an uncomfortable feeling knowing that at any moment that driver’s act of irresponsibility could cause property damage or at worse cause serious injury or kill an innocent person or family. As we drop back away from them, we can only hope that the police will get them stopped and off the road before they hurt somebody. If we have a phone handy we may even make an emergency call to tip off law enforcement while doing what we can to avoid becoming a victim ourselves. It’s scary and a dangerous situation that all too often ends tragically.

Deputy Sheriff Carey Coney, previously with the Albion Police Department and now with the Noble County Sheriff’s Department takes the task of getting drunk or chemically impaired drivers off the road seriously. He took it so serious that Drug Free Noble County and the Noble County Sheriff’s Department have jointly awarded Deputy Carey Coney with a special Certificate of Recognition for his efforts. Deputy Coney made 108 OWI arrests in 2009. All of the arrests were made during 217 shifts of duty, leading all other Noble County officers in 2009.

When asked how he managed to average an arrest for every other shift of duty Deputy Coney says that he has a passion for it. Coney said, “I’ve seen crashes where people have died as a result of drunk or impaired driving. I wish I could devote my whole career to this.”

Deputy Coney says he has worked ten or twelve serious crashes involving injuries and deaths. Four of those crashes resulted in deaths. He said, “I’m humbled and honored to be recognized for this but I’m really just doing my job, which is to serve and protect the citizens of Noble County."
